Where Is The Justice?

Where Is The Justice?

In today’s world, when people are frustrated or feel dejected, they ask, “Where is Dharma Nyayam?”

After receiving a curse, the Pancha Pandavas were walking in the forest. They became very tired and began searching for water. The brothers dug the ground for water and the Goddess of Water appeared. She exclaimed, “I will not give you water! First answer my question. If you answer correctly, I will give you water. If not, I will kill you.” Arjuna goes first. He was unable to answer the Goddess’s question and she killed him. Secondly, Bhima approached her. He was also killed because he failed to answer her question. The same happened to Nakula and Sahadeva. Finally, Yudhishthira goes. The Goddess said, “All your four brothers are gone. Ask me back for one and I will give life back to that one brother.” Yudhishthira said to the Goddess, “Give me back Nakula.” The Goddess then gave him back all the four brothers.

Why? The Goddess of Water asked Yudhishthira why, of all the four brothers, you chose Nakula. He then explained that Bhima, Arjuna, Sahadeva and I are born to Kunti. Nakula is born to Madri, my step mother. Yudhishthira continued, “For my mother, I am here. For the other mother, there is nobody. So give me back Nakula.” The Goddess was so pleased by Yudhishthira’s sense of fairness, with his sense of justice or Dharma, that she says, “May your Dharma flourish in this World.”

That is the beauty and necessity of being fair. Yudhishthira could have been selfish and asked for his own brothers who were born to his own mother. There were many other reasons why he could have chosen his other brothers but he was seeing what Dharma was. He did not see what “my heart says”, but he saw what was Dharma. Therefore, Dharma wins!

Yudhishthira is now known to be Dharmaraja.
