Her Divine Grace Sri Jayanthi Kumaraswami joined in laughter and shared wisdom with children belonging to poor households in Chennai. On the evening of Chitra Poornima, children flocked to receive Swamiji’s blessings and eagerly awaited Her words. Swamiji believes that every child, regardless of the socioeconomic status of his/her family, should be given the support necessary to ensure their voices are heard and their rights are protected. She spoke to the children about the importance of being attentive and doing well at school but more so while a sound education is important, they should all excel in a skill of their liking.
With great humility sitting with the children, Swamiji demonstrated the Namaskar gesture; putting the two palms together. “Whether you think Jesus is God, or Allah is God, or Maha Vishnu is God- just put your hands together like this and God will be with you,” explained Swamiji.
She lectured about personal hygiene and healthy eating. Her Holiness urged the children to keep their bodies clean, healthy and strong. Children are the nations’ builders. Therefore, Swamiji strongly believes that every child should be given the opportunity to learn how to read. Swamiji received a loud cheer from the children when She announced Her plan to provide free access to reading books at a library especially for the children who are denied or cannot afford books to read. The opening of the library in the near future is an initiative by the Sri Jai Sathya Mission. Through the Sri Jai Sathya Mission, Swamiji also distributed school supplies, healthy snacks and buttermilk which is rich in Vitamin B12, calcium and potassium.
Annual Chitra Poornima Annadhanam
While Swamiji met with children in the city, the grand Chitra Poornima celebration under the patronage of Sri Jayanthi Kumaraswami outside Chennai was in full swing. Every year, Swamiji offers Annadhanam to thousands of people on this day. Annadhanam is the offering of food and is known to be one of the greatest dhanam or charity.
